COVID-19 and the consequences of isolating the elderly*

Recently, The Drop Collaborative teamed up with another local non-profit, KidsLikeUs, to create The Enchanted Garden - ergonomically designed for and hosts classes, events and workshops specifically for the Special Needs and Senior Citizen population in our community.

Among the many reasons for this initiative, one was to address the mental health and social isolation that often exists in the world of Senior Citizens and Special Needs. COVID19 has further negatively impacted these populations.

"Self-isolation will disproportionately affect elderly individuals whose only social contact is out of the home, such as at daycare venues, community centres, and places of worship. Those who do not have close family or friends, and rely on the support of voluntary services or social care, could be placed at additional risk, along with those who are already lonely, isolated, or secluded." - *The Lancet/Public Health - Richard Armitage and Laura B Nellums

Through previous generous donations for our Starting to Thriving: Creating Your Own Raised-Bed Garden (A DC COVID19 Initiative) - we were able to take our 15 Raised-Beds and adapt them ergonomically to suit the needs of Senior Citizens and Special Needs - as we begin to create The Enchanted Garden. Many Senior Citizens are now suffering from social isolation due to COVID19. We would love to reach out to this community - those in nursing homes, senior centers, senior living, skilled nursing rehabs, etc. - any senior groups that would like to contribute their artistic talents to our current initiative - painting a paver (stepping stone) that will be included as part of our entire walkway through our Enchanted Garden.

Please share this information and let's connect with those, in a meaningful way, and let them know we are thinking of them and want them to be part of our community garden. AND It is so easy, affordable and fun! LEARN MORE HERE ➡️ https://www.dropcollaborative.com/group-tricities
