A New Season at The Drop Collaborative

As students prepare to return to school, there’s plenty happening at The Drop Collaborative. More raised beds, another season of planting and harvesting, some familiar faces in the barn, and one especially exciting development.


More Room to Grow and Give

We’ve added more raised beds this year, expanding the opportunities for students to plant, tend, and harvest fresh produce for donation to the community.

It’s one of the most rewarding parts of the program. Students see their work go from seed to harvest and ultimately become something they can share with others.


Bessie’s Expecting!

Earlier this summer, it was time for Rose, Bessie’s calf, to be weaned from her mother. Bessie and Rose temporarily left our farm and went to a local farm operated by a former student of our agriculture teacher, Cody Ayers.


While we expected the separation might be difficult for Rose, she adapted remarkably well and soon bonded with another calf her own age.


The time away also gave Bessie a chance to rebuild her strength after nursing. She was successfully bred again, and we’re happy to announce that Bessie is expecting another calf!


Bessie returned to our farm last week, with Rose expected to return soon.


For our students, Bessie’s pregnancy brings a special opportunity to observe and learn about the process firsthand, hopefully culminating in the arrival of a new calf.


Meanwhile, Back at the Pig Pen...

Mary Sue and Harvey, our longtime resident pigs, remain happily at home on the farm. They’re older now, very settled into farm life, and continue to be a familiar part of the program for our students.


Looking Ahead

One of the things we love about agricultural education is that there is always something new to experience. This year, students will have more to grow, more to give, and a new calf to look forward to.


There’s also something wonderfully full circle about having Bessie and Rose cared for by one of Cody’s former students. It’s a small example of what agricultural education can become when the lessons learned at school continue long after graduation.


We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back and seeing where this next season takes us.
