Drop By The Farm: More Than a Field Trip

Most field trips are easy to forget. A bus ride. A quick walk-through. A few moments that don’t quite stick.
But what happens when learning isn’t something you watch, it’s something you step into?
On April 10, the Drop Collaborative will host its annual “Drop By The Farm” day. This is a private event where local kindergarten students are invited into a space designed not just to teach, but to be experienced. This is not about observing. It is about participating.
Students will not just hear about agriculture. They will see it, touch it, and ask questions about it in real time. They will move through the farm in a way that turns learning into something tangible.

What makes this day even more meaningful is who is leading it. Students from the DC AG program at Unaka High School will guide the experience. They will teach, demonstrate, and mentor younger students in a way that naturally bridges generations. Under the guidance of Cody Ayers, Unaka High AG Teacher, and Dr. Melissa Loveless, CTE Principal and event creator, this becomes more than a visit. It becomes something that stays with them.

The day will include games, food, and take-home goodies, but also something more lasting. Each child will receive a “Drop By The Farm” coloring book that tells the story of the Drop Collaborative, illustrated by student artist Maria Venable. It is a simple idea, but it gives each child something they can bring home. Something they can revisit. Something they can share.
This is what Drop Collaborative has always been about. Not just land. Not just farming. But connection.
Between students. Between generations. Between learning and doing. When young people are given responsibility, they rise. When education becomes hands-on, it sticks. When community shows up, it multiplies.
This is a private event for participating schools. However, former DC AG students who would like to attend are welcome with advance RSVP at info@dropcollaborative.com.
Moments like this do not always make headlines, but they matter. We are grateful to the sponsors, supporters, and friends who continue to make this day possible.
Photos and a closer look at the day will follow.
