Lessons in Love, Self Care and Community from an Unlikely Friend
About five years ago, I received a surprising text from a friend visiting our farm with his son: "When did you get a pig?" I replied, puzzled, "I never got a pig."
The investigation began. And as it turned out, although some theories were floated, no one really knows how a very large pig ever did end up in our barn.
Since that day, Mary Sue has become a beloved member of our farm family. Her exact species and age remain a mystery, but her gentle nature and remarkable spirit are undeniable.
From the moment she arrived, Mary Sue adapted effortlessly to farm life. She found comfort in the barn, made friends with every creature imaginable—ducks, cats, dogs, chickens, even cows—and formed bonds with humans too. When a new calf needed guidance, Mary Sue offered companionship and solace, showing a deep empathy that touched us all.
Most remarkably, Mary Sue extended her kindness beyond our farm. When a lonely elderly neighbor lost his dog, Mary Sue began visiting him daily. Her visits brought him out of his shell, offering him companionship and purpose once more.
Sometimes I wonder if the Lord sends us angels like Mary Sue, just to see if we are paying attention. For here, right before us, is a lesson of loving thy neighbor and loving thyself. Thank you Mary Sue - you are quite the treasure!
